La Dolce Bakery Coming to Lily's Gift Shop Space on Fifth

Lily's Gift Shop, the often-empty perfume and accessories shop on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Tenth Street, closed less than two months ago, and already a new tenant has been lined up for the space.

The sorner storefront has been gutted and buildout has begun on La Dolce Bakery, which will be specializing in French and Italian pastries and baked goods, according to the owner, Keith. The full list of offerings hasn't been settled upon yet (they're still in the very early stages of planning and at this point are still focused on securing the necessary permits), but he seemed particularly excited about the cannoli.

There are a couple more La Dolce Bakeries in the tri-state area, but no word on whether this one will be connected.

How many friggin' bakeries does this neighborhood need? Doesn't anyone have a business plan? Do these business plans include a due diligence of the neighborhood's needs? Do banks really loan tens of thousands of dollars to people opening bakeries in Park Slope?

Back in the day, Park Slope had a ton of bakeries. Why do you complain about everything, anon?

I'm not complaining...it's really no skin off my teeth if we have thirty or forty bakeries in Park Slope. Nor do I particularly care if we have several hundred coffee and tea bars in the neighborhood. And, I rejoice at the number of real estate agencies and nail salons, as well. I'm simply wondering aloud what logic goes into the idea of an entrepreneur opening up such a business. Since comments are unfiltered here, why not ask those with more insight than I have (obviously, I have little, if any, insight) for the answers to these questions. Since I, like most of you, post comments using dozens of different names, my comments are pretty much balanced between positive reactions and negative reactions. Anyway, I don't know what "day" you are recalling, but I've lived in the neighborhood for thirty years and we never had such a quantity of bakeries.

You also complained yesterday about Calexio making some crack about new restaurants needing to cater to vegetarians and 1/3 of the menu at Calexico is vegetarian.

You just like to complain about everything. Even when you don't know what you're talking about. If we have too many bakeries, some will close. There's no reason to talk trash about every single thing before it opens. Especially because you complain if it's Mexican, you complain if it's a bakery, you complain if it's a bar, you complain if it's a restaurant that isn't 99% vegetarian.

It's NEVER a real estate office or nail salon opening yet you constantly make references to those. It's just odd.

not all of us post under tons of different names, I only use this one name. BTW, Dan, why not make it so people have to use only one name?

Anyway, glad to see a real, full fledged bakery opening up, there are a few bakeries around, wouldn't call it a ton. And, I really can't think of any French ones (Colson doesn't count in my mind, lol).

oh, and, anon? I don't know where you have lived for over 30 years, but I have lived in Park Slope for 25 years and I remember when there were a bunch of bakeries on 7th Avenue with a smattering of some on further up 5th Avenue also.

I remember when that clothing store 4play was a bakery and I remember one on 7th avenue near 4th or 5th Street also just to name a few

Your definition of "complaint" is vastly different than mine. I merely said that there is a segment of the community that would be attracted to a quality Mexican restaurant that featured vegetarian dishes. Now, let's both stop wasting time on this trivial bantering. You've got better things to do, I'm sure.

I personally like the fact that we know have a bakery just about every 3 blocks in PS. WHo could complain about fresh bread and cookies??

There does seem to be a lot of bakeries in the South end of the neighborhood.

On 5th ave:
5th street: Du Jour
6th street: Brooklyn Bread
10th street: La Dolce
16th street: Sweet Treasures
18th street: La Boulangerie Lopez
21st street: Girasol

near/on 9th street:
Colson (6th ave)
Almondine (7th ave)
Crespella (7th ave - though not exactly a bakery)

I'm not complaining because bakeries are awesome but that's a lot of competition.

Those bakeries are pretty wide spread around the neighborhood, so, not a lot of competition considering this is basically a neighborhood where people walk to stores/shops closest to their homes. Someone living in center Slope is not very likely to walk to 21st Street for baked goods unless there is something phenomenal there for them. When you look at it that way, not a lot of competition.

As for Lopez, the last time I was there (in February), they had a small selection of baked goods and seem to specialize in serving brunch and food more.

the new place opening in the Perch location, though not open yet, seems to be doing the same thing. A small selection of baked things while more serving food.

Boulangerie Lopez has the same baked goods theyve always had (inc best 7 grain bread you can find anywhere!) theyvejust expnded in the not so new space to sit down service. They are a real neighborhood treasure and the nicest folks

I must have went on a bad day then because the day I went, I saw a much smaller selection of baked goods and breads than they had when they were just a straight up bakery. Also, purchased a cake from them and thought the quality had gone down, I used to go there all the time for birthday cakes and such and get great compliments on them and the one I bought back then was not up to par. perhaps they had a bad day. But, to me, it seems they are more concerned with the restaurant part of their business nowadays.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there at this point
